Mental Health Treatment Plans after 1 Nov: What’s Changing and How to Prepare

Watch recording

Please note: This webinar has 1 hour of RACGP CPD allocated. You can quicklog your CPD through the CPD Home app.

From 1 November 2025, the way GPs manage Mental Health Treatment Plans (MHTPs) will change significantly. Dedicated MBS items for MHTP reviews (such as 2712 and 2713) will be removed, with mental health care instead billed under standard consultation items, including the new Level E consults. At the same time, new referral rules under Better Access mean referrals will need to come from a patient’s ‘usual GP’ or from a GP within their MyMedicare-registered practice, placing greater emphasis on continuity of care.

This session takes you through the full MHTP process from end to end. You’ll learn how to bill appropriately under the new structure, set up workflows that make it easier for your team to deliver high-quality care, and manage patient conversations with confidence. With insights from Chris Smeed the session will give your practice practical tools to streamline, stay compliant and continue providing the best outcomes for patients.

In this session, you’ll learn how to:

  • Explain the changes to MHTP review items and Better Access referral rules coming into effect from 1 November

  • Deliver MHTPs confidently from initiation through to review, using standard consultation items and appropriate billing practices

  • Implement streamlined workflows that support the full MHTP process across GPs, nurses and administrative staff

  • Apply effective communication strategies to guide patients through the MHTP process and manage expectations under the new rules

  • Monitor compliance and care quality to ensure sustainable delivery of MHTPs within the new framework
